Steve Holmes

Automation Maintenance Superintendent, UPM-Kymmene. Grand Rapids, MN

Electric Motor Management

Abstract: The success of a motor testing program that integrates vibration analysis and infrared scanning. How program was implemented and results achieved.

Bio: Steve has over 20 years experience in the paper industry and has worked in various positions including research, production, engineering, IT, and maintenance. He feels fortunate to have his name on a US patent and to have had the opportunity to visit many paper mills throughout Europe benchmarking and learning what world class really is.

Chris Hykin
Maintenance Superintendent, International Paper, Augusta, GA

CMMS- The backbone of effective planning and scheduling

Abstract: Many mills find that their planning and scheduling processes and CMMS are completely independent of each other. This leads to frustration, an inefficient workforce and even failure of the planning and scheduling efforts. Does your current CMMS support the needs of your planning and scheduling program? This presentation is a case study showing how the two systems were interwoven to provide an effective solution to integration. In it, we will discuss best practices, road blocks, and key milestones along the road to a successful implementation.

Bio: Chris has 9 years experience in pulp and paper industry. He has held positions in capital project engineering, maintenance, and mill reliability. He began his career with the former Champion International at the Canton Mill and currently directs the reliability program at International Paper's Augusta, Ga., Mill. Chris earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Florida State University.

Mike Johnson

Director of Machinery Lubrication Technologies, Noria Corporation, Orlando, FL.

Lubrication Best Practices In A Lean Workforce: Prepare For Doing More With Less

Abstract: "If you think you've struggled with staffing issues in the past, buckle up your chin strap and get ready for war! There is a battle brewing over talented and knowledgeable entry level technicians needed to fill the gap to be created by the departure of the baby boomers and the growth of the reliability culture. This is already an issue in the area of machine lubrication care, and it is going to become even more challenging in the next 15 years. Now is the time to prepare the mill to deliver 'Best Practice' quality machine care in the midst of expected wrenching change in the workforce through work practice development, machine retrofits and design changes, and skills development for the unskilled. Come and see how this can be done.

Bio: Mike Johnson works for Noria Reliability Services as the Director of Machinery Lubrication Technologies. His responsibilities include managing projects, developing new methods and practices associated with machinery lubrication activities, education, editing for Machinery Lubrication Magazine and managing a team of consultants. He has 19 years experience supporting technical lubrication activities in capital-intensive manufacturing facilities.

Halfdan Jonsson
Maintenance Manager, Norske Skog, Skogn, Norway

The road-map to successful condition monitoring at Norske Skog, Skogn.

Abstract: The paper- and pulp mill Norske Skog in Skogn has used condition monitoring (CM) since mid-seventies starting with shock pulse measurements on bearings and today also using shock pulse spectrum and vibration analysis.
The early development of the program depended on enthusiastic engineers doing the measurements and now CM is firmly implemented as a strategic part of the maintenance policy, by extensive use of on – and off line systems.
This presentation will cover some of the important steps that made CM part of the maintenance culture and also show the economical effect the program has. The technical solutions and measuring technologies will also be covered through case stories on some important applications.

Bio: Halfdan started at the Skogn mill in 1984 as a design engineer and moved into the position of maintenance engineer in 1986. In 1990 Halfdan was appointed Maintenance Manager for the mechanical department.

The Mechanical Department has 68 employees. Three of the 68 work directly with condition monitoring. The department are supported by three engineers. Halfdan has extensive experience in successfully implementing combined condition monitoring techniques. His experience entails on-line and off-line solutions.

Halfdan Jonsson lives in the small coast town of Skogn north of Trondheim in Norway, where one of Norske Skog’s pulp and paper mills is located. Halfdan was born in Iceland where he studied Engineering at the Technical University of Iceland and later at Trondheim TIH where he graduated.
